There are several hundred acupuncture points throughout the body. The ear is a micro system of the whole body. During detoxification acupuncture of the ear is the chosen area to treat. There are several reasons for this. The ear is easy to reach and is very close to the brain. The ear is located in the temperal bone. This is of neurological significance as all the cranial nerves (except two) run through the temperal bone into the ear. there is speculation that treating the ear is stimulating the cranial nerves. In giving stimulation to the cranial nerves one is directly accessing the brain and helping it to begin manufacturing the peptides which bond together to form the endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine which the body needs to experience normalcy, and which are thrown out of balance through sustained narcotic use. There are five primary points in the ear used. They are the sympathetic, shen mein, kidney, liver, and heart-lung points. Only the last three of these are used in heroin detox.
Acupuncture has been proven to be successful in both clinical settings and under controlled experimental conditions. The results obtained from a one year acupuncture detoxification program study in Portland, Oregon and a blind study of acupuncture treatment with chronic alcoholics in Hennepin County, Minnesota are:
People who received acupuncture detoxification treatment were two times more likely to continue in rehabilitation therapy than people who did not receive acupuncture treatment.
More than 70% of people treated with acupuncture successfully completed detoxification, compared with only 50% of hose who did not receive the treatment. For those detoxifying from alcohol, the success rate was 90%.
Recidivism (tendency to relapse) of alcohol and drug addicts decreased from 20-25% to 5% for patients receiving acupuncture detoxification treatments.
In a blind study of chronic alcoholics in Hennepin County, 37% of the treatment group receiving acupuncture completed the program. Only 7.4% of the control group had a successful completion of the program.

Shen Men • Heart 7 Spirit Gate. Shu Stream Point on the Heart Channel. Yuan Source Point on the Heart Channel.
Location: On the transverse wrist crease, in the small depression between the pisiform and ulna bones.
Nei Guan • Pericardium 6 Inner Pass. Luo Connecting Point on the Pericardium Channel to TE4.
Location: On the anterior forearm, 2 cun superior to the wrist crease.
Liver 1 Large Pile. Jing Well Point on the Liver Channel.
Location: On the lateral side of the first digit, the great toe, 0.1 cun from the corner of the nail bed.
Xing Jian • Liver 2 Moving Between. Ying Spring Point on the Liver Channel.
Location: On the dorsum of the foot, between the first and second metatarsophalangeal joints, 0.5 cun proximal to the web margin.
Tai Chong • Liver 3 Great Surge. Shu Stream Point on the Liver Channel.
Location: On the dorsum of the foot, between the first and second metatarsal bones, approximately 2 cun superior to the web margin.
Zhong Feng • Liver 4 Mound Center. Jing River Point on the Liver Channel.
Location: On the dorsum of the foot, 1 cun anterior to the medial malleolus, in the depression medial to the tibialis anterior tendon.
